How to Pack a Barrel for Shipping
- At PJP Exporting, we know that packing a barrel efficiently is key to ensuring your items arrive safely in Grenada. Whether you’re sending food, household items, or gifts to loved ones, packing your barrel properly can prevent damage and make the most of your shipping space. Follow our step-by-step guide to pack your barrel like a pro.
Step 1: Choose the Right Barrel
- Make sure you’re using a durable, food-grade barrel that’s suitable for shipping. Barrels come in different sizes, but the most common for shipping are 75 gallon and 55 gallon barrels. These are large, sturdy, and sealable, perfect for holding a variety of items.

Step 2: Gather Your Items
Decide what you’re going to pack. Some common items shipped in barrels include:
- Non-perishable food items (rice, flour, canned goods, etc.)
- Clothes and shoes
- Toiletries and household goods
- Small appliances
Avoid packing prohibited items such as flammable materials or items restricted by customs.
Step 3: Organize Items by Weight and Type
- Start by organizing your items, separating heavier items from lighter, more fragile ones. This will help you pack efficiently and protect your belongings.
Step 4: Start with Heavier Items
- Place the heaviest items at the bottom of the barrel. This creates a stable base and prevents lighter, fragile items from being crushed. If you’re shipping food items like rice or flour, put them in sealed plastic bags or containers for extra protection.
Step 5: Protect Fragile Items
- Wrap fragile items, like glass bottles or electronics, in bubble wrap, clothes, or towels. Nestle them between soft items like clothing, blankets, or bedding to provide cushioning.

Step 6: Maximize Space
- Pack your barrel tightly to avoid shifting during transport. Use smaller items, such as toiletries or canned goods, to fill any gaps between larger items. This not only makes better use of space but also prevents items from moving around and getting damaged.
Step 7: Seal the Barrel
- Once packed, make sure the barrel is securely sealed. Use the metal clamp or band to fasten the lid tightly. If necessary, use extra plastic wrap or tape around the lid to reinforce the seal and keep it watertight.
Step 8: Label Your Barrel
- Clearly label the barrel with the recipient’s full name, address, and contact information, as well as your own. This ensures it reaches the right destination without delays.
